CAUSE AND EFFECT.

The fight develops, since we have said, in the loneliness of the sea, surrounded with water and with fish that do not sting, but he finds in everything the nobility, dignity and beauty of a full life, in which each one gains that one for what it fights.
He does not believe that it could be defeated "The man is not done for the defeat. A man can be destroyed, but not defeated ", because before it will be destroyed: the fight, as that of a Greek hero against his tragic destination, gives moral height to the personage, enclosedly beauty; it fights against the fish, his "brother", in whom he finds also nobility and dignity, because it fights to survive, expecting to obtain a victory that the life was denying to him till then; but it fights against the sharks even knowing that nothing will achieve, that only there will stay the testimony of which it had achieved it; it fights in spite of the pain and the desperation, because it knows that only it is the life.

CONFLICTS.

The protagonist, the old Santiago, which has known better times, is defeated by the life (it lives in a wretched situation, from Manolin's charity to the beginning of the story), though it continues in his daily fight (the fishing, even if it has not fished anything throughout 84 days). Something is in this old fisherman, his dignity of being a human being, who makes to him be respected by the boy (and for some inhabitants of the village, since we see ultimately).
It lives in almost complete loneliness, surrounded only with recollections (and between them his knowledge of the baseball would be also), and is employed now at loneliness (constant he throws in lack the boy in his work), because for all it is the defeated one. He still believes in yes same (85 it might be his number of the luck), since his combat in the life is noble and waits to be corresponded.

SETTING.

The fundamental space of the statement, the sea, is also a protagonist. For this we can affirm that in the "Old man and the sea” the exterior spaces prevail. There is no presence of a meticulous description of the sea, she cannot be, but the narrator, across the look of the old fisherman, speaks constant about the wind direction, about the breeze, about the reflex of the sea, about the harmful effect of the Sun on his eyes, about the fish that they find in him. We know that it is a question of the Caribbean Sea - since the action happens in Cuba, near Havana.
Also one refers to some interior space; in I make concrete, the cabin in which the fisherman lives. Of this one it is said that one was finding way arrives from the shore of the sea. It is a hut of only a quarter, which has a table, a chair, a bed and a place to cook with coal. The local poverty speaks to us also about the social condition of the protagonist, a poor fisherman who does not have to buy either food or fodders to go fishing. The cabin places in a people close to Havana, of which there are named other houses and the Terrace, the local bar.
